My daughter is 17 and just started a new job at a retail store. They consistently will give her a scheduled shift and then switch it to a on call position, barely giving her a 24 hr notice. We live in California. Is she also required to have a work permit? She has worked 2 days and this is not been brought up. Can they do this?

Reply: Regarding switching hours without much notice, yes this is legal. Regarding whether she needs a work permit, google "California department of labor" and go to that website - it'll tell you whether 17-year-olds need a special work permit.
