Evil boss likes to make people fail

The services that you can hire to make reference calls to your boss and then they provide you documentation for litigation, what are they called? How can I find one in the plains?

I am a federal employee, and my boss regularly submarines people for personal reasons, not performance based. We have a pass/fail performance appraisal and it is not worth anything. All jobs are boss-to-boss be referrals by phone. Our boss tells us we are doing a great job, but won't give a positive reference. We go to a 5 tier plan next year and we will all be in a world of hurt when we are told we rock at our jobs but our appraisals say C-. Right now we only have the negative phone call to work against us. In the federal sector where I work, checking "do not contact" on an application is a red flag, and I have heard that many bosses will just throw them away.

My boss mainly acts nice to me, but if anything is wrong it is definitely guilty before proven innocent. I have worked hard to make our relationship better. Some days appear really good, but then I bring home big projects and don't get any recognition. We have a substantial awards program. Many nice words but no action. Nothing tangible, ever. I have told my boss I am looking to go to KCMO for better job opportunities for my spouse, and this has appeared to go over ok. But I know that it is just words, and that is the poison. I have had my boss invite me into their office at their request to ask me how my job hunt was going, then offer to write me a referral by email while I was standing there. I don't trust my boss. I thought it was really suspicious. Am I paranoid?

The power my boss has over the bid process here is staggering. We call our office the Hotel California, because you can bid out any time you like but you can never leave.

Help. I just want to feed my family.

Reply: If you google "background check" you will find loads of firms that will check your references and document the information that they get. However, please note that they all charge a fee for this, and many of them will be leery of performing this service for you if you tell them you're trying to get information for a lawsuit. I recommend that you have a friend do it instead. Pick someone with good professional phone manners and help him/her make up a good cover story (i.e., that he/she is a prospective employer etc.) Prepare a list of questions ahead of time, and don't forget to include questions about negative stuff and weaknesses and so on. Have your friend document all responses and include names, dates, times and other pertinent information. Finally, please understand that, contrary to popular belief, employers are legally allowed (and sometimes legally required!) to say negative things about current and former employees, as long as those negative things are true, or the employer believes them to be true. Good luck.
