    Should I stay or go?

I've been at a new job for about 1 month now. I'm still feeling the situation out... It's a small firm, basically, a one-man shop. Well, an assistant who i've enjoyed working with, was hired around the same time as me, and now I get an email from the the owner saying he "fired" her. I HATE that term. It's just a "drama" word. "Letting go" is a better way to put it IMO.

Anyway, now I'm nervous. This owner seems real tough on his assistants. He's said things that indicate he doesn't view people in that position as "valuable." An attitude which is immature IMO. I notice the attitude from his comments, eg, he once said something to the effect of,"She's just an assistant. I can tell her what to do..." It was a demeaning comment of that kind.

So, i've picked up on his attitude now i'm wondering how much I can/want to/ put up with this individual. The good thing is - as far as i can tell, he has a surprisingly different attitude toward me. (Why he does, I don't know)

I think it may boil down to the fact that he can bill my time and therefore sees my labor as earning him money but he doesn't see the assistants the same way bc they dont earn money for the business.

anyway, i'm just wondering, whether or not I should stick around this place. On the one hand, I've had a bad time this past year finding a place to stay, and I'm concerned about stability in my job history. But, i'd rather not stay around sickos...ugh.

    any thoughts/advise will be great!

Reply: Hadenuff, If you need the money and the boss seems to let you alone well enough, staying is definetly a viable option. If you're sick of the place and don't like watching what happens to others you care about, then find another job and leave. Seeing your labor as earning him money is perfectly natural for a boss; if he wasn't that way, he wouldn't stay in business very long. His being demeaning is another thing. It might be worth your while to point out to him, perhaps after you leave, that high turnover of his staff can't help but bring him down eventually. Let him know that word about a 'crappy' boss gets out, possibly by those so-called worthless assistants. Even stubborn people may be induced to change if its their bread-and-butter that's being threatened.

Reply: This is only going to get worse and you're setting yourself up for more abuse. It's not going to get better - he does this to everyone and you are next. He is unconscious and is NOT going to wake up to his behavior. Be a martyr, or take control of your future. Your choice.
