    the "boss"

I work in a big/small office. Almost everyone is new, including my boss, so they depend on the 'veterans' on how things are run. For me, there is someone in my group that's been here for a long time and is telling me how things are to be done and such, as if my boss. Giving me more work, etc. like a boss. But not my boss. People trust this "boss" and even my boss goes to this "boss" for help and feedback, not me. How do I turn this situation around and give hints that You Are Not My Boss?

Reply: You should ask your boss for official confirmation as to who is assigning you your job duties and who you are to report to. It may put your boss on the spot especially since he's apparently so comfortable leaving everything on this veteran's plate. Try and keep your question from coming across as a complaint, which would only put him on the defense. Instead, focus on the fact that you are new and just want to be sure of who you need to report to. Perhaps, it may make him realize that he's relinquishing his managerial responsibilities. If you can't get a straight answer, well...there's your answer. The real boss apparently condones the current situation and the veteran coworker taking the initiative is your 'boss'.
