    Bad Supervisor

What legal recourse do we employees have?

I work for an airline. At the station I work for, we have a horrible supervisor, that is about to start running employees away. We just can't put up with it anymore.

This supervisor is condescending, and patronizing. The supervisor treats grown adults like children. The supervisor has become physical on several occassions with employees, including myself, having slapped me on the hand, out of anger. This supervisor recently called the police on another employee, because this employee approached the supervisor about their behavior. To top everything off, this supervisor does not do their job, at all.

Recently this supervisor was overheard stating to an employee of another airline, that they are going to fall down, when there are no witnesses, and then blame a certain employee of our airline, of pushing them, and then have this employee of the other airline act as their witness.

We have contacted our HR dept. on several occassions. They have flown this supervisor to headquarters, and spoken with them, more than once, but nothing is being done. It is making our work days miserable. It is creating a truly hostile work environment!

I've heard of lawsuits for "negligent retention", and am curious as to what other actions, we can take in this situation.

Reply: See a lawyer immediately. Go in a group, if necessary. Also, you may want to get more than one legal opinion. Many lawyers will give a free initial consultation and let you know what legal recourses are available to you. Knowledge is power in this case: learn all you can about employment law in your state. Then work to expose these threats. I've even seen where people have written letters to the editor of their local newspaper or officials in city halls. This supervisor sounds psychotic. There must be some lame management going on higher up to overlook his behavior, so you may have to deal with his supervisors as well!

Reply: As to obtaining legal information: You can call the bar association of your state, get operator assistance and ask for telephone number of say: NJ bar association. The bar association can give you names and nubers of attorney to contact and get a consultation on your matter. Cost is say $35 to 50, for half-hour consultation.
