Boss jokingly says "You're fired."

In a Holiday Gift Exchange, I received a gift, my supervisor says, "I want that" I replied, "Well, I got it." My supervisor then says, "Well, I'm your Supervisor." I reply, "Well, it's still mine." Lastly my supervisor states, "Well, You're Fired." Everyone knew we were joking, until the last comment was said and the mood in the room immediately dropped. Actually, everyone in the room was the entire department! Do I have any recourse for this???

I would recommend contacting your EEOC office and possibly your State Attorney General. I would recommend having a written account concerning this situation. Also, while the situation is fresh, I would get your co-workers to write detailed descriptions of what happened. You could also contact the U.S. Department of Labor. There is nothing worse than a supervisor who miss-uses their power to make others feel inferior. I wish you well. |

I would not overreact to one incident of "youre fired" joking, but if it happens on a regular basis I would start looking for another job. based on my past experiences. |
