    Get your priorities straight!

Our company has grown immensely over the past 10 years. The boss has been here from inception over 20 years ago and we have strong, capable people in middle management. Unfortunately the staff are not let alone to do their job and are relentlessly micro-managed and so the 'team' is essentially ineffective.

The list is too long to go into to, but I have come to the conclusion that the boss doesn't have a clue of what his priorities should be, due to the exponential growth. Instead of focusing on the big picture and high level priorities, he is found sifting through the recycle bin to determine if departments are recycling the correct materials (non-confidential). Lately we receive trivial emails relating to proper dress code and recycling the correct materials. We've got bigger fish to fry and if he was able to focus on the things he should, this company wouldn't be going down the toilet. The environment is toxic and EVERYONE is ready to leave - is there anything else we can do?

Reply: I'm in a similar situation. The thing I've figured out is that just because someone has a great idea or the ability to start a company they may not have the management skills required to run one.
