    how do you demote someone

I have a person who works for me as a data entry clerk. Upper management does not think this person does enough to contribute and would like me to demote them to doing their current job half of the day and the other half of the day working in production. I feel she is productive and does contribute. I believe it is more of a personal issue between this person and the owner of our company. I'm stuck in the middle. How do I explain this to her?

Reply: Interesting - For the last 3 years I have worked for a very small company with an owner/operator who has been very abusive to his employees for years and has suffered a lot of turnover and productivity problems as a result. I have been working as a sort of middle manager, and now it seems as though he is attempting to demote me. I am confident that I have done an excellent job, and my co-workers are happy with my work. My boss has something negative to say about anything I touch. It's really quite absurd at times. I would say that you should probably stand by your worker if she is good. If you give in to the upper management now, what will they ask you to do next? You need to be able to keep good people, and you need to be able to deal honestly with your subordinates. Tell her the truth.

Reply: If this worker is good and puts in the effort you are looking for, then stand by her! Should the boss take your stance as an affront, then the boss isn't worth working for. I know from experience.
