I work with others in a small office and they are telling my boss I am abusive and can't get along with them, which is not true. My boss believes them and not me. There are no other people who I see on a regular basis who can vouch for me. I am new and our boss will do performance reviews soon. Now the bigwigs are coming in to find out exactly what is going on, and it's just me against 4 or 5 people. What do I do?

Reply: I am just curious as to how others would see this. I am a RN. I gave up smoking recently and since then my boss has been trying to stress me so I will take it up again. Her latest ploy was to ask if I had been getting work at a second job. Boss 1 told me that they had called her for work. I wondered what was wrong with me and rang Boss 2 and asked If I had stuffed up as I wasn't getting any work and said my boss had been asked to work there. I was advised I had done nothing wrong and now I see it was just to make me lose confidence in myself. This person asked again if I had worked at second place and said they asked her and another co worker at first job. Funny thing is Boss 2 doesn't know her and she isn't on their books. She also makes out I am not managing well. I've caught on and am just playing it cool, She is always running co-workers down too. What do you think? I am wondering if I should be flattered as she's going to so much trouble to get me onto the ciggies again.

Reply: You could check with a lawyer and make sure of your options - many of them offer free initial consultations. If it were me, I'd ask to see the documentation proving where I'd been abusive. How new are you? They may just want to get rid of you and not want to pay unemployment. Again, get some legal counsel for employment laws in your area.

Reply: If it is not true, it is not true - so when they question you, stay calm, give short answers, and make sure your version sounds like this in not what they have said. If you servive this- you will have to tread carefully with your group, do not shut-down, but keep your nose clean and do not respond to their conflict- say maybe- I am a team player and I just want to do a good job, then do your job. this might just be a case of a "bad-fit" in that you just do not fit with the present personalities. With so many problems at the beginning- it does not sound good. Do not blame yourself if you did not initiate trouble. Some people are troublemakers. Do not play into it. I have been there, the group was not going to let me get along with them, and I have been at places where I was easily and quickly integrated into the group- they just liked me- nothing I did any different from the group that did not like me.
