is it legal for person at work to lt everyone know my salary?

i'm in a bit of a tricky situation, please help!!

a person at work has took it upon himself to tell all, how much i earn in a meeting , which i didnt attend. basically questioning my position and what i do.

he works in HR and i didnt think he could tell anyone my private business.

i do my job well, and dont think my salary has anything to do with anyone else.

as i do not know or wish to know anyone elses private business.

therefore causing a bad rapport with my collegues, is this legal? i thought it was confidential and private.

does anyone know what i can do next.

i'm very angry at the moment and would like to know my rights on this, i'm finding it hard to research.

    any help is most appreciated.

    many thanks

Reply: If you're in the US, this is legal. If you're in Canada, it's not legal.

Reply: If the company or office you are with has an employee manual, get a copy of it. Most paces have a policy against discussing salary. I had a supervisor who did this to me and it got her demoted when we all gathered up and reported it. She underestimated the team.

Reply: Be sure to document the incident and send it to a higher-up, whether the behavior is legal or not.

Reply: You obviously have an enemy. You ought to figure out why. One place to begin is with your knowledge of English. If your correspondence at work is always without capital letters, there is a problem.

Reply: I am not an attorney - my question would be what do you think is "illegal" about it? Yes, I agree with "matildagsd" procedure. And keep up the good work for the company
