Stating "FACT" sounds a lot like harassment

I work in an academic environment, and recently my supervisor has changed, as has my work environment in general. My responbility, however, has not changed - thankfully - I am still an educator, just new boss and new room number. I have had the most unpleasant experience of being reminded on three occasions in the last three weeks that if I don't have enough students in my class, I will be out of a job. I realize this, but I also realize what my job is - educator, not recruiter. When I approached my new boss on this, and told her respectfully that it feels like she is trying to intimidate me and the other educators in my area, she said "I'm just stating fact, if you have no students, you will not be working here. How is that intimidating you?" Now, understand that I know as a teacher I will not be working without students - I KNOW. However, my role at the school is not one of recruitment, and I actually do not know how I can personally effect the number of students in the school aside from not running them off when they come in to register. Isn't there a recruiter for such responsiblity? My role is that of educator. Anyhow, this Poor Leader likes to lead with intimidation and then "Statement of Fact". Stating a fact such as this is really harassment of some sort isn't it? After all, the cashier at the local grocery isn't told weekly that without customers she will have no job, is she?

Reply: Unfortunately, harassment in employment is only illegal if it's based on protected classes - no pun intended :-) - such as race, gender, religion, disability, and so on. It doesn't sound like your boss is causing you stress based on any of these reasons. It sounds like you have a major jerk for a boss, and unfortunately, being a jerk is not illegal. My advice to you would be to continue teaching to the best of your abilities, and the next time he reminds you that you need X number of students to keep your job, ask him (calmly and with a nice friendly smile on your face - you're asking him for advice, not being sarcastic) what he suggests you can do to increase the number of students in your classes. Also, there are some great articles on this site about how to deal with bully bosses, and bosses who like their employees to be all stressed out so they (the bosses) can feel in control.
