Current boss contacted my new potential employer

I am currently waiting for an offer letter from a company that I have been interviewing with for 2 months-the job has been offered and accepted verbally. At the beginning of the interview process, I was told in order to move forward, I had to notify my current employer of my intention to pursue a career with this company. My current employer is a customer of my potential employer. I was not recruited, I actively sought employment at this company and I am not contractually obligated by any type of non-compete clauses. My immediate supervisor was supportive, offered to give a glowing reference and felt that this was an appropriate career path for me.

Three weeks later, my boss, called the vice president of my potential employer ranting and raving that they had no right to hire me and take his employee. Note: 2 others in my company have already left to work for this company. This was a management position with a $15K salary increase. The job offer has been rescinded. Did my current employer have the right to jeapordize my employment opportunity with this new company? I know he acted unethically but did he act illegally?
