    My @#$ micromanaging boss

    I started working with a solo owner of a company. She is driving me nuts! Her ability to see the forest for the trees is pretty low. I'm a professional and I actually have more experience than her but she insists on making me follow these ridiculous rules - in her crazy quest for "uniformity" of all company documents, she's got these ridiculous rules about fonts, body of documents, and I'm in writing. These are soo non-essential if people understand what you're writing, cos that's the point, not what freaking font you use. It's not just the fonts.

    I'm starting to see it hides some kind of narrow minded compulsion for control and order - she wants everything written exactly the same style as hers. She wastes time about non-essential stuff. UGH.

    I'd like to make her see the forest for the trees and break her little rules. I'm used to more freedom in the job.

    Any advise on dealing with these Type-A kinds? Im not shy about saying if I disagree with something and we've had a few clashes this week.

    I'm also passively refusing to do things which are a complete waste of time....let her do them or hire someone for word process...cause i know my work is pretty good and better than average in content...and i aint wasting time with this other stuff that doesn't count!

    Reply: About the "uniformity" rules. That is pretty common. Not that big of a deal. On that particular hot spot for you - save your energy and just go along- Once you set up your "unform" formatting of the documents - you are home free to do your writing. Perhaps the "font" issues is an example of "go along to get along, and "don't sweat the small stuff" - Type-A people want things done their way or you take the highway. Re-gear your head - this is how this new job does things, and just do it. Then it won't even bother you.

    Reply: Hi hadenuff! Sorry to hear you're having problems. Unfortunately this "uniformity" thing is VERY common in organizations - they (the organizations) like to have everything they put out to have a certain look. You're going to run into "uniformity" over and over again no matter where you work or how many jobs you have, so it may be prudent to just get used to it and go with the flow. As unlucky7 has said, this shouldn't really be such a big deal for you, and as you yourself said, it's the content that counts, not how it's formatted. Good luck with this, I hope you're able to turn it into a non-issue.

    Reply: Company Branding is very "in" right now and "uniformity" across the board is the goal. Type-A personalities sometimes take an extremely narrow focus too far but I agree that you should just get used to it and go with the flow on this one. Getting too wrapped up with something small usually costs the employee credibility.
