Being let go from a job and thinking I was laid off but they are saying I was fired.

I had a job in a beauty salon and spa. The old boss sold the shop to one of the girls who worked for her. I worked for her for about a month and she let me go saying things were slow and that they had had a few complaints from clients about my work. As far as I knew I only had one person say she was not happy with the way I waxed one of her eyebrows. I went to school for a year and know my abilities. They never told me anything before about my work not being up to their standards and trying to help me, but one day said they had to Let Me Go. So I used them on my resume' to find a new job only to find out that they are telling everyone I was fired because of numerous complaints about me work. Had I know this was the case with them I sure never would have added them to my resume'. Does anyone know what the laws are in Connecticut about exemployers bad mouthing an exemployee. They are holding me back from getting another job in my field. I need some help.

Reply: I am in Connecticut and I know if someone is telling ties about you you can sue them for slander or defamation of character.

Reply: Also, they do not want you to get a job locally and take their customers.
