    Shortchanged by former employer

Last month I started teaching part-time at a local private college. After less than 2 weeks of teaching I was let go because some (but not all) of my students complained that they could not follow me and I was not responsive enough to their questions. I did not contest my dissmissal and I offered to teach another class sometime in the future. I was supposed to have been paid $20 for each contact hour of teaching - a total of 14 hours since I started plus one hour of orientation. This salary did not include any preparation time (test writing, scoring test, student counseling etc.) which equalled the actual time I spent teaching. Assuming that I had left on a positive note I waited for my pay check. It came in the mail and it was for only 10 hours! How can I get the extra 5 hours ($100) that I am due?

P.S. On the second week of teaching I left my 4 hour night and 2 hour afternoon class one hour early since I did not have much material to teach that week.

P.P.S. The employment contract I signed when I began teaching emphasized "employment at will" and only supported the employer's interests.

Reply: I also teach adjunct at a small college. My feelings are that there must be more to this situation; A. You were really poor and did not check for understanding during class. B. Somebody else wanted/got the job and you're out. Summary: being asked to leave before the term ended might not be considered a "positive note"; forget the money, could you have filled the "time available" during class with discussion; sparked conversation of current levels of understanding; get to know the students, wants, needs, interests? Ask your contact at the college how to try again if you truly want to teach there or save your young reputation. good luck

Reply: Rashidas: I received full pay and more for the time I taught at this college. Problem solved. Rashidas
