    micromanging supervisor

    I have a supervisor that micromanages. Recently she has been 'going behind closed doors' with my subordinate. I have concerns that they are both going behind my back. My subordinate is volunteering for tasks that aren't under the purview of her responsibilities. However, she is not able to complete her responsibilities. I'm concerned if I go to my boss, she won't believe me as they have now become 'best friends'. I'm open to any and all suggestions on how to cope.

    Reply: Nothing in your post indicates that your supervisor is a micromanager, so I won't address that. However, that said, your supervisor's "going behind closed doors" with your subordinate, while not an indication of micromanaging behaviour, does bode ill for your relationship with your supervisor. Since you can't confront your supervisor about "going behind closed doors" with your subordinate, because you really don't know for sure exactly what's going on behind those closed doors (who knows...it may be something harmless like they're socializing or similar), I definitely don't recommend you even try to address this issue. I do recommend that you make a list of your subordinate's responsibilities, and then include detailed information on how she hasn't been meeting those responsibilities. Include dates and times wherever possible. Then take the list to your supervisor and ask for advice on how to approach your subordinate with this information, and also on how to refuse your subordinate's volunteering until she starts meeting her responsibilities. Your supervisor's response to this request for advice may give you a better insight into the nature of your supervisor's relationship with your subordinate.

    Reply: Your boss is not following the chain of command. That is not a good sign or a good sign of a good boss. As far as the extra projects go, if they are from your boss there really is not much you can do until you get proof she is really falling behind and then your boss has no choice but to stick with the chain of command.
