    Be positive

I know it sounds like a funny topic to start off with when you read this story, but it will be clear at the end. I worked for a start up company for over 12 years. It was a great job and I moved up through the company several times. Though I moved up in the company and had to the respect of everyone that worked with me, I had one person who did not care for me. It so happened to be the president. Not a good person not to have on your side. One day my boss and three regional sales managers approached me about taking a sales position. I was happy and agreed to take the position; after all it was a better paying job. The president heard about it and went into the CEO’s office and dragged my name through the mud and the CEO put pressure on my boss and the regional mangers. I was asked to not apply for the job and if I were to apply that they could start digging to find a way to fire you. I was so mad. Here I was asked to apply and then everyone runs for cover.

Right after that my wife gets sick and is in and out of the hospital for the next year, so for insurance purposes I had to stay at that job. Now here is the kick, the president has raked my name in the mud with the CEO, but there is no evidence of that on my evaluations. So now the President goes out of his way looking for any problems there are out there and also putting his hand into the pot to make sure problems will arise. He made sure there was no longer any support around me and took my evaluation from my boss and filled out the paper himself giving me the first bad evaluation ever. Now he had to do this, because he raked my name through the mud with the CEO and he had to show he was correct. The corporate world requires it. It is the old story of politics.

I left and joined another company just to see my new boss get fired a week later. The next hired boss fired me one week after his hiring. I had no training, did not work with anyone and was still waiting for my company paper from HR to fill out.

Today I work for myself. Those events prepared me for what I am doing today by showing me what I don’t like so I could move on to something I do. This does not happen over night, but it will happen. Mean while you will go through feeling helpless, then sadness, next anger, next settled, next you will realize your fault in the situation, next you move on, next you are positive again because now you grew up and are moving on to what you want to do. We are all selfish people in someway. It is like that old saying “Someone’s misfortune is someone else’s opportunity”. (or something like that) If you are butting heads and you get your way, that is the other persons misfortune and vise versa. Just remember to work your way up to positive again.

Reply: Thank you for sharing your story, Darvey. I'm so glad that you came out the wiser from this - I've read enough horror stories where the employee went through years of counselling or committed suicide. There IS light at the end of the tunnel, and working your way up to positive, as you said, will help you find it.

Reply: I am currently being lied on severly at my job and I just don't know what to do. My boss after great evaluations have distorted my character and work ethics. She took me to an hr rep and lied on my and twisted stories into another. What do you do to survive?

Reply: Whow Dejah, I am going to post a message about feeling trapped, please read it and think about it. What you are going through is not rare unfortunately. Again we are all selfish in a way and there is something your boss wants that she feels she can accomplish by going about the manner in which she is. It seems to be at your expense no matter if it is wrong or right. Your boss feels just as justified in doing what she is doing as much as you feel that she is smearing your name. Once you see that and accept that it will be easier for you to deal with it. Ask yourself is this job worth me stressing out? Is staying here what I want to do? Does this job define me or do I define any job I do? Never think you are not worth pursuing your life proactively and you dictate in your life where you want to go by not getting caught up in politics unless you like to play them. I don’t and it sounds like you don’t either so read “Never Feel Trapped” and let me know if that helps you any. Thanks Darvey

Reply: Thank you for your inspiring story and your words of wisdom. The corporate world is a tough place, and unfortunately, sometimes, the mean and unethical ones rise through the ranks. However, as your story shows, we all get wiser as we get our experience in the "school of hard knocks".
