    Report Former Employer's Unlawful Actions?

I was let go about two weeks ago, by a boss who was, in my opinion, a unscrupulous bully. I am having trouble, mentally, getting over the unfairness of it all (not just the unjust firing, but other unresolved employment issues as well). I should have resigned quite a while ago, as resentment had built up and my level of disrepect, towards her, had reached an unprecedented level, but, I liked what I was doing and felt satisfied when she was not around. (Though I can not claim perfection, I tried pretty hard to be an ideal employee, so this "firing" really stings - it happened the morning she came in after I had told her we needed to work out some issues or I was going to need to leave/resign.) Some of the things that caused me to lose respect for this woman were how she handled business matters in unethical and unlawful ways, some of which violate tax laws. I am now seriously contemplating reporting her actions to the IRS, which I had thought about doing even prior to being let go, but I am having mixed thoughts and emotions about taking such steps. This would be rather vengeful of me, at this juncture, and although I have a need for resolution I'm not sure whether or not this will give me any. I usually try to live by the golden rule, and this would certainly not be doing unto others as I would have them do unto me (but, on the other hand, I do not try to defraud the IRS). Should I report her failure to follow tax laws or not?

Reply: In a perfect world, yes, you should report her to the IRS. That said, however, keep in mind that she will be legally allowed to tell that to any future prospective employers of yours who call her for a reference about you. Even though they may be perfectly law-abiding themselves, the picture they'll get of you is someone who runs off and "tells" on people whenever you're angry at them. I think the best thing you can do at this point is to channel all that vengeful energy into finding a new job - as they say, living well (as you'll be when you're working again) is the best revenge! In addition, I've personally found that a new job is the best way to get over an old job...and I think you'll find this works for you too. (And finally, for future reference, don't EVER give your boss an ultimatum, like "some things need to be fixed or I'm quitting" - as you personally learned to your dismay, this is usually the quickest way to get fired.)
