Should I stick it out?

I work for a small company (7 people) that has been in business 20+years. The owner and "operations" person are siblings. The other two managers are married and best friends with owner. They have been with the company 10+ years. The other three employees are not related and have been with company less then 4 years. Here is the the problem that I have...there is great resistance to change and the operations person is most resistant. Also has control over every aspect of the company. Almost all are techonophobic or technochallenged. I came to company with the promise/expectation of bringing it into the new millenium, but they still do things like its 1980. I could leave and make more $$ in short-run, but staying may be more lunrative and more experience in long run. What do you think I should do?

What you've typed doesn't sound that bad, just annoying. But, you have taken the time and effort to post your complaint on this website...that tells me the problem bothers you more then your post seems to imply. Family owned/operated businesses can be really great or really terrible depending on the family. This family seems like they are happy with the way things are and the don't seem interested in changing anytime soon.
I suggest you start documenting ways you can improve the business with technology. Show them some examples if you can...get sales pitches from local companies or prepare presentations comparing the current operations with what could be (the better way). If they refuse to budge at all, start looking elsewhere. Happines is priceless. If they seem receptive to some of your ideas, but not all of them, then there is hope. Just keep working to improve. If you have good motives and they aren't completely blocking you then there is the possibility that things will change for the better. |

I also work in a small family owned office with some of the same problems. I find the resistance to change has more to do with a fear of losing control than anything else. Give it a fair chance, perhaps a year, and if you can demonstrate a better bottom line with your changes and they still resist, run don't walk away before you invest too much of yourself. |

I would move on. You will only get frustrated and waste your time in a place where everybody is related in one way or the other. |
