Unprofessional boss--how does a new graduate cope?

I'm on a graduate programme, aiming at advancing my career quite quickly. However, the first boss I have been assigned to is entirely impossible to work with.

He misses all his deadlines, annoys a LOT of people, and yet has time to spend a lot of time on email...

This week he took a surprise day off to play golf, and left me to have to explain why all our deadlines were going to be missed, without briefing me at all.

Suffice to say, I am continually made to look like an idiot.

How do I confront him without wrecking our working r'ship?

Reply: Sounds like he needs a good kick in the butt. Go over his head to HIS boss!

Reply: You don't. You finish your semester with him and then get assigned to someone else. If you're in a grad program, then it sounds like you're on some sort of TA-ship or possibly research fellowship. It also sounds like your boss/prof uses students as slave labor, and doesn't feel particularly accountable to them. <<<<>>>> Even if this guy has leads to good jobs -- seek out his co-researchers or co-business associates. Find out who has openings for a grad or who knows of someone with openings. Contact those people -- don't backstab your current boss verbally, don't mention him at all if you can help it, that's fatal -- and then just transfer out.
