    Stuck government employee

25 yrs of county government employment, and if possible its even getting worse. I have only 5 years to go until I can retire. I'm not sure I'll make it these last five. My current office is run by total idiots, and maniacs who for reasons of their own stay on well past the 30yrs they need to. I've seen co-worker who are currently being harrassed, and bullied by their supervisors. I've experienced a manager who openly admits interpreting federal laws to suit the needs of our office. It's all amazing to me still. We have a union who is impotent when it come to harrassment that fall under the current laws of age, sex, religion, etc. It just seems harder and harder to go to work each day knowing there will be another stupid, unreasonable, and just plain dumb demand on us that is not really job related. I'm considering applying for disability instead of waiting on retirement. I feel more and more stressed over the general apathy of the administartion and all the managers who let constant bullying, and stupidity continue while not doing anything to assist the very hard working employees. I just cant take it anymore! Any advice???

Reply: If you have only 5 years to go, do you have enough money put by so that you can 1) quit and 2) pay your expenses while you do a thorough 6-month - to 1-year job search? You sound miserable, and maybe the inertia of your daily routine (get up, go to work, have a horrid day at work, go home, feel awful , go to sleep, get up ...) has kept you from just making a strong lateral move and sending in your notice. <<>> If you are *not* living paycheck-to-paycheck, quitting sounds like your best option. What good will another 5 years of torture be to get your retirement package if the stress is such that you have a heart attack or stroke before that? Also, if your workplace is as nasty as you say it is, what prevents them from rewriting your contract next year, or the year after that, to alter or seriously downgrade your retirement package? Or they might even string you along for another 4 years, and then fire you with 9 months to go just so they don't have to pay out any retirement compensation. <<>> I've actually seen that done to people in a former workplace -- folk with 15 years on the job were sacked and then re-hired as hourly wage employees, which saved the corporation a whole lot in terms of healthcare benefits, salaries, retirement bennies, and such (sarcasm intentional). People (mostly women) came to me in tears -- they had mortgages, families to support, had lived in the area for a couple of decades. All gone overnight with a simple pink slip. I gave my two weeks' notice after that. <<>> Bottom line: if it's that awful, and you have some money put by, for the love of Mike, quit. Life's too short.

Reply: I have 13 years in my job and its also municipal government. i work for a water department that is owned and opersted by the city its in ,. Your story hits home with me I never have worked for an outfit that promotes blatant ignorance and incompetence and bullying by supervisors and management.I REFUSE TO coform to forced stupidity as they constantly request , My sugestion is , I document everything they tell me to do and i also keep records of my daily work activity, i file greievences as often as necesary. This has backed them off some what due to the fact that i can prove without a reasonable doubt who is the real idiot. It is still very stressful to deal with this and i hope and pray for greener pastures but in the mean time i'm sticking it out nad the sad outcome is that the real loosers are the tax payers who allow this to go on and just take for granted that thier tax dollars are being sensibley spent toward smart decision makeing , when the truth is the incompetence level in goverment agencys continues to reach sewer level around this great country we live in . The main reqson this is happening is we the people are allowing these parasites to destroy are way of life and infostructures of securities and good living .

Reply: Why don't you just quit? Keeping little records of a long list of grievances -- who are you going to show it to? And when? And what do you expect the outcome will be? <<<<<<>>>>>> If you 'pray for greener pastures,' if you're actually *praying* for a change, wouldn't it be better to just leave, get some retraining, and then you wouldn't have to deal with these folk that you are characterizing as "parasites"? Or is it that you get some sort of satisfaction out of constantly going head-to-head with these people, filing a never-ending stream of grievances so you can maintain your autonomy or your sense of control in a situation that clearly doesn't warrant such effort (when you have the option of just quitting)?<<<<<<>>>>>> Why try to impress these people with your un-back-down-ability when you hate them so much? What does their opinion count for, in the larger scheme of things?

Reply: You are definitely not the first person I've met who's frusterated with a gov't job. Seems to be standard for state/federal/local gov'ts that they are run by red-tape-loving idiots. I guess you have to weigh - is five years worth the mental pain? You've put in 25, can you last another 5? Maybe? Maybe not? That's a decision you have to make. Obviously you are feeling a lot of anguish. If you decide to stay until retirement you need to find something to make you happy and keep you sane. Best of luck to you. Sorry I can't give you better advice.
