    Board ignoring incompetence-where to start?

I worked for a non-profit agency for over six years, during that time my employer had me work on her campaign for school board while I was working at the agency. I didn't find out until late last year that it was a violation of federal tax law. An audit was performed by a funding agency and it is known that she had employees work on her campaign.

In addition to the political activities, there are alot of things that were wrong at the agency. There were two major fires (a shelter) in one of which three people could have died because the director made the call to put a handicapped person on the second floor which was not handicap accessible, residents had no heat on the second floor, human rights (religious) were violated, using agency resources for profit, and others had witnessed the director and program director (mother and daughter) using agency funds for personal expenses. Everyone that works there is afraid to say anything, even when things aren't right, because people are fired immediately when they question the director.

I participated in the audit after approaching a board member and she put me in touch with the funding agency that was investigating the shelter. I quit after being harassed (which was the best thing I have ever done).

My question is--What can I do about the situation? I have been reluctant to make statements to the state attorney and IRS because the agency could lose its non-profit status, but the board is turning a blind eye to the problems. The local paper has had articles that have addressed these problems. I don't know where else to go or get help from.
