The silent type boss - basically says nothing to you; excludes you from important communication; then one day just decides to fire you. These companies work on an "at will" basis. Do they really get to treat you as they will after devoting your efforts to them and planning life around a job you expect to have?

Hi Martyvand...your description of the silent boss who excludes you from day one and then fires you "at will" a few weeks later is chillingly almost identical to what I got handed to me a year or so back. On top of that, on day one, she conveniently forgot to tell me that my "true shift" was not the one we agreed to. Had I that moment in time back...I'd have run, not walked to the nearest exit. Have kicked myself a thousand times since then. exeasterner

I worked for a major retail company in a management position. The corporate leaders decided to institute a personel policy where the store managers would be held responcible if any complaints came from their staff (including the newest part-time clerk.) Sounds like a good idea, but in practice it was a dissaster. The company climate became one of manipulation instead of direct, honest communication between managers and staff. The staff attitude deteriorated because clear lines of acceptable behavior blurred, and managers spent their time shucking responcibility, instead of clearly guiding their staffs. The company had the worst moral among all levels of employees that I have ever seen. When innappropiate behavior cannot be delt with on a honest basis, the good employees behavior deteriorated. The "norm" among the managers became to transfer problem employees to another location (make them someone else's problem) or to use social manipulation to try and make them go away. No effort was made to change the behavior to something more productive because this would mean addressing the problem directly (and the person might complain). The management attitude became a cult of bullies and manipulation. It was a horrible place to work.

I have a screamer. I will take a silent type any day. She screamed at a secretary when she turned on the Christmas lights six minutes early. She has done impressions of people she does not like in the office in public. She's kinda crazy but they let her stay!

I work for a 13 year old princess wannabe. She actually kept people waiting for her in a meeting for 10 minutes so she could show off her new shoes to her friend. If you explain to her why something won't work she says "make it happen baby!" I have to stop myself every time from telling her that phrase went out during the 80's, just like that damn powersuit she's wearing! She acts like an infant. She's exactly the kind of woman that should not be in an important position because she makes women look like flippant, spoiled children instead of strong leaders.
