Is she a bad boss or am I a bad employee?

Two months ago I went from being a hospital RN in an ICU (many years' experience) to a corporate job in healthcare program development. Me - married 25 yrs, work full time, 3 kids, normal suburban lifestyle, pretty smart, easygoing type. New manager - mid 30s, very attractive, PsyD., smart, hyper but seemed nice at interviews, very eager to hire me. Department - consists of manager, me, and two other RNs based out of a branch 1200 miles away. Two other RNs - one middle aged gruff guy chronically behind on projects, one middle aged attractive woman with 2 teenagers who has helped me a lot with computer skills, talks me through things over the phone, smart, has been friendly outside work as I recently counseled her through a health crisis her daugter was having. They hate each other, and don't seem to like manager. She's down at their branch several times a month. Was out of town a lot until past week. Problems - Learning needs not prioritized when I started (i.e., learn the business? hone computer skills?) Several projects the crabby guy was working on critical at time I started, deadlines converging, I was pressed into service, worked much OT to help, did good job. But manager very critical, took my work and gave to crabby guy so he could incorporate into his project, did not acknowledge my work, tosses out random assignments, changes deadlines, capricious and arbitrary, in my opinion, impatient when I ask for clarification, distant. In short, makes me feel like an idiot. Are all corporate managers like this?

Dear wattanurse,
I think many corporate managers are as you described in your note. I think the reason is that these managers have to please their bosses and show profits at the same time. While I do not know how it is for a RN, I will share how it felt to move from being the only network administrator for a small company to becoming a Presales Technical Consultant at a large software company. As a network administrator, my job was to keep the network up and respond to user requests for assistance. As long as I did these tasks, all was well for me and my boss. When I joined my new company as a presales consultant, my boss seldom spoke to me and I could not figure out “where the problems were that I needed to solve”. I was lost. It was not until my boss and I had a two hour discussion at a conference that I figured it out. I had to help the company sell software! So I picked a product I understood, learned enough about it to get the sales team to trust me, and I have been happy since that day. My advice to you is to have a discussion with your boss so that you understand the true goal of this company and find a way that you can use those 25 years as a RN to contribute to the company’s ultimate goal and bottom line.
Good luck!

Hello wattanurse, YOUR R NOT IDIOT. I think some Corporate Managers are like that!!!!!I understand your situation. I recently moved to another state,I applied for my first Job, got the interview, it went really good. I received phone call for second interview and than they offered me the Job with the salary I wanted. Everything was going great! I started my first day of work, but after couple of days I realized that the manager who hired me is horrible. The only thing she knew was to say I don't know or she would say you know what don't worry about it right now.!!! I was so surprised! "don't worry about it right now, but dame it teach me how to do this and why I should not worry about it now.! I worked lot of over OT just like you. in the second month of my position i was asked to learn someone else's stuff because that person was going on vacation. I learned the new stuff and completed everything on time without any complain, well i did not receive any good feedback, she said thank you and you saved me. but when the person came back from the vacation they both turned against me. I don't know for what reason. But to make the long story short, I walked out of that Job because I was not able to accecpt manager's attitude. So there are bosses out there who has no clue what they are doing.. they are just trying to keep their job. Don't put yourself down!!!! |

I too have a boss who is vague at best. In a meeting between myself, her, and yes, believe it or not, a co-worker, I was told I wasn't performing up to par with what needs to be done. I asked for specifics, didn't get any. All in all, I am angry that a co-worker who had nothing to do wih any of this was there, and when I asked for specifics wasn't given any. This is her first supv job and she's TERRIBLE at it. I say, for now, stick it out. Your record speaks for itself. That's what I'm doing. If it gets too bad, get HR involved. |
