Required to take personality test and discuss results with boss

my job has been making changes...hours etc..now the newest thing is that they are requiring us to take a personality test(of course they are not calling it that) and discuss the results with our boss! This is supposedly to help with future training, but wouldn't it be anonymous if that was the case? We have to answer about 100 questions, many of which are not job related..questions about friends and family etc.to an outside testing firm. I am VERY uncomfortable with this..privacy is important to me, along with keeping business and personal life seperate..... The outside firm then stores our answers in their database. They want everyones test by Friday May 6.

Reply: Hello, I had taken the test you are discribing in your query. It's not bad at all. Just answer whatever you can. When you submit the answers they will create report based on your answer and they will also give you the copy of it. you will be able to see how your personality is. I think it's no big deal but it you don't feel comfortable than just let you manager know about.

Reply: Your boss is being abusive, intruding that way on your privacy. What test is he using ? on what norms is it based ? are there questions that are clear-cut discriminatory ? get anything wrong with this procedure and fight back. I don't know about elsewhere but un quebec there are no-no questions that a board of government workplace norms department(Normes du travail) specificaly list as derogatory. Psychological tests, designed with ethical standards in mind dont bother with being intrusive or not and should not be used in more delicate contexts such as boss-employe relations. good luck and if you answer back to my 3questions, I ll be happy to give you cues on the possible arguments against this policy since I m familiar with many leading psycho-tests

Reply: The test is from some outside consulting firm. The questions ask about relationships with friends, leisure time activites etc, I took the test because I did not want to be the only one who didint. The questions are not discriminatory, just non work related. Why does my employer want to know how I settle conflicts with friends?

Reply: If this test is one that I have been used to, then it is as you say a personality test. Asking questions about how you handle situations generally can give indicative information about how you react to other situations; such as high pressure situations, or how you work together with a team (how you settle conflict with friends could come into this category - friends are the closest to work teams a questionnaire could get!). As long as none of these answers have specific details in them (i.e. what your friends names are etc) then I think the process can only help your boss understand how you react and work best. If you have normal access to the internet have a look for Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) information - basically a way of helping boss' understand their teams a little more (for example, know not to insist someone who likes to think about things before answering to stand up and answer a question off the top of their head in front of a crowd!). Hope this helps!
