I put in my notice yesterday. I have worked in my office for 3 1/2 years. I am one of the few that has been there the longest. (The turnover is horrible) My last day was to be June 24. I live in VA and it is not necessary to gove 2 weeks notice. Anyway, today I got talked to about "bad-mouthing" my office, etc. (Which I wasn't doing) I was then escourted out. They did not give me a reason. How do I know if I was fired or just told they didn't want me to work there anymore? Should I still use them as a reference? Please help!

Reply: the reason they escorted you off the property and made an excuse for doing so is that you must of caught them off guard. some compainies feel that you will not do you job right or you will do something to damage them. I have seen it at companies before. If you want to find out how they assest the siuation. go apply for unemployment. tell them you were escorted off the property for something you did not do. if they just want you to go away, they will not contest. but either way you find out were they stand. and yes you will need to use them as a reference. you cannot have a void of 3 1/2 years on the resume. they cannot give you a bad reference, just not one at all. some companies do not check. anyway you gave a 2 week notice. the old co cannot say the other reasons.

Reply: It seems pretty extreme that they would escort you out of the building. It seems to me that the person who gave you the "talking to" is probably annoyed that you beat him to the punch. Why did you decide to quit after 3 1/2 years? Did you hear that they might fire you? Plus, they can't fire you after you have quit. Instead of being so dramatic, maybe they should have just said, "we prefer that you pack up your belongings now, instead of staying for the full two weeks." As for the reference, dude is right. they can not give you a bad reference. The companies that call up your previous employment are only allowed to ask certain questions, any thing outside of those questions can get both companies into trouble. One question however, that is allowed, whic can be bad for you is, "Would you every rehire ______." If they say no. then the company that is considering hiring you could then ask why.

Reply: Thanks, Kim. I decided to quit after 3 1/2 years because I realized how inconsistent there policies were. (Double standards, not letting us have time off w/o pay anymore, etc.) This wasn't the first time I had thought of quitting. This time I actually put in my notice first instead of looking for a job and then puttting in my notice. They were not going to fire me. I was a big asset to the company. I always had great reviews and everyone liked me. I totally agree with you, they wanted to beat me to the punch. They listened to a phone conversation I was having with my husband. I was telling him that management was treating me like crap and he told me to finish ou the week and not go back. They overheard this and decided to "screw me" before I "screwed them". They gave me some bogus "reasons" and then escorted me out. Everyone at work was shocked and disgusted at the way they treated me. I won't be suprised if more people decide to leave also.

Reply: Do not self-doubt anymore. They do not care what you think. Put yourself back together before you get crazy. You had people reviewed your performance. I wasn't get any review from my boss but people always come to me that they like the way I handle my work. They all know that. It wasn't fun to work with fear and uncomfortable feeling. Many time I decided to quit. My education does not help me at all. They hate people who got education. You work in At Will states like me. They can do what they want to. They can sabotage your job, your life if they feel like it. I mean that if you are outstanding person in the office. They don't like to see star shining on their face. This is something that we need to consider whether this system should be accepted. A year 2000 is already passed, but the way they treat us is like we were still living in 1900. I also work with half and half boss. I don't know how to explain. (1 -> Male acts like female, and 1 female acts like male). That was the worst case in my life. Get out of that environment is the best for you at this point. But it's take time to cope with this trauma. I am dealing with it right now. Be strong and try to put yourself back together.

Reply: I am resigning from my company after 20 years becaue of a bully executive director. He has now turned his bullying on me, he trashed me one eveening while working late nd then expected me to just take it in stride. I told him I was resignng, now he is trying intimidation tactics. I have to be careful becasue of my long tenure. And I want health beenefits while I look for another job. But I do need to get out of this place! I understand your positions.

Reply: While not required in right to work states, a notice of at least 2 weeks is standard. Though you give a notice, the employer is not obligated to have you actually work out the notice. You didn't get fired, you quit, and you boss essentially said, "fine -- you can leave now rather than work here for another 2 weeks."

Reply: Oh .. in response to your question about references, I wouldn't use them as a reference. You will have to explain this to prospective employers, and should take care not to seem bitter or vindictive, but clear that you had differing visions for the company, yada yada.

Reply: I just reread the other posts more closely. Sierra writes >>Anyway, today I got talked to about "bad-mouthing" my office, etc. (Which I wasn't doing) I was then escourted out.<< Later, she writes >>They listened to a phone conversation I was having with my husband. I was telling him that management was treating me like crap.<< I would have fired her, too. Whether her complaints are legit or not, would any employer want to cut a check each week to an employee who belives they are being treated "like crap"?

Reply: I feel like office politic is also strong in many places as well as in the meaning of b-u-l-l-y-i-n-g. I complained about myself and still submitted my opinion. This is to tell that this stupid tactic needs to be taken care of. Th ecompany may not see the cost yert but if we keep adding it up. There are so much cost spending on that ugly practice. I just wanted we think that we all need to be treated fair, treated us right, and color blind. We should not care who they are they have their right to work and to live too. My case, after thinking over and over, resigning is the best option. I don't see anything better in such environment. I saw them keep hiring and firing every two or three week. I don't understand HR as well. They think they do the job. For me, I don't think so. they use company budget and toss it away. I told them that people can be taught, trained and be polished for better performance. For my experience, those three parts are my skills and talent. They believe that there are so many people on the street need a job. They can fire and hire if they want to. If we do not act tame to them. If we speak from our mind, from our honest,we got punish. This is the OLD FASHION practice that I saw in many companies here. This is why I said that education is very important. I don't mean people who has degrees they are all good. There is odd too. The bad part is the system here made them to be supervisor or manager too easy. They are not mature enough to be a manager. In being a supervisor or manager is not you have experience for example as cashier, line cook, food prep, cleaning room, for 2 years or more. If they act (tame)to their boss. Their boss made them a manager or Sup. What I see is that and so many workplace promote from within. It is okay for that. I don't argue with that at all. My point is when they become a manager/Sup, they think that power in their hand can do anything. That is why bullying is existed everywhere.

Reply: Dear Sierra, Take it from me don"t use them as a reference. By law they are not allowed to say anything derogatory about you but they don't seem to care about the law if they just tossed you out for no good reason. I would also make a complaint with the local employment dept. Hope you have found work.

Reply: My wife is required in an at-will state to give 30 day notice due to contract. She gave 30 days yesterday and they said someone new would start ASAP, even if inside 30 days. My lawyer said state IN WRITING that she is willing to work the 30 days, and if not allowed to, it will be the boss terminating her not the other way around. Should I do this (its Colorado) or NEGATE her notice and say, "Fine. Resignation rescinded. I won't quit if you won't give me 30 days."
