Where am I in the chain?

I am the library assistant in a county library. My supervisor treats me equal to the part-time clerks in the department. Their ideas are usually more accepted by her than my own. One clerk has gotten upset twice (once a year) for my speaking to her in front of other employees. Am I to consider myself an equal even though in my job description it says that I am to assist in supervising them? What can I do or say without getting into more trouble?

    Thanks for any help.
