    Nasty boss

I am a Master of Laws student and am currently working to fund myself through college at a well known sporting company. Ever since I became employed at the company, there has been so many problems. Many of my friends have left and because I have to have money each week, I have been forced to stay. Twice during the day I had to run off to the bathroom and hide in the cubicle for 10 minutes.

Last week, my boss pulled me out for a 'one-on-one' talk when I arrived at work to tell me that I better improve my performance because two gossips in the company had told her that I wasn't doing my job. I was utterly appalled, that a boss would believe the lies of other people. When I went to work today, she spoke nastily to be the entire time, told me that it wasn't her responsibility to do certain tasks and lectured me constantly. When it was time for me to leave, she told me to stay an extra half an hour. I told her no and that I was being picked up by a family member and that my family member would be put out. She let me go, but said some snide comment about 'running to my Daddy.' THis woman is sad, unattractive woman in her 50s, who's husband left her.

I am stressing out majorly before I go to work. Any tips for coping with a nasty bitch like her.

Reply: I think it's good you recognize that woman is just plain nasty. Realize that you are totally a worthy, intelligent person & you can be secure that you put forth your best effort daily. Rise above the bitch. Here are two ways to handle your situation: 1. Just always agree with her and smile. Pretend that you like her. That would TOTALLY throw her for a loop. If she makes a rude comment to you reply with a smile and say, "you are absolutely right!" Or "I couldn't have said that better." 2. Another strategy if you can't pretend like that is to write down your accomplishments / or tasks completed in the day. Include any positive feedback you've received (from anyone). And then make a copy for her. Let her know that you just want to be sure she was aware of what you had been working on that day - or that week. This will also document for you that you ARE doing your job and if ever fired, you'd have a case. Also, it would be a good idea if you fear being fired that you document her actions / comments / behaviors / interactions with others. Chances are it's not company policy to treat employees with disrepect and the company would side with you. Hope things get better!

Reply: I agree with sugar. Sounds like your bossy boss is jealous of your future. You are working to better your future and she's stuck in a deadend job she obviously does not like. Document everything and be sure she knows you are doing so, like sugar stated. Never talk about yourself or your education but pretend you are interested in theirs (including the gossips). You might find this approach will open them up and they may change their attitude toward you. Good Luck!!
