The lies are making me sick

Hi, I work for very large company that is determined to have its valued employees commit to the companies propaganda. Example: "We're continuing to provide excellence in training to enable our employees to have the skills and tools they require to excel". Reality: They don't provide training or tools. Example: "We're committed to ensuring that each employee is fairly reviewed based upon quantified information" Reality: Go ahead, fill out the form, listen to the review results, but bear in mind it's meaningless as mgmt will review the 'real' results verbally and make decisions later based upon that. The level of duplicity is incredible! Employees are not only expected to agree with these statements, they're expected to voluntarily spout these lies to other employees and clients. The worst is the lunches. Every few weeks employees are asked to give up a lunch break to travel to a meeting room where we're fed awful food and forced to listen to mgmt speak these types of lies. I can't do it. I just CAN'T eat and be manipulated. On my own time no less! What is going on? Then there are the employee surveys – they’re always confused by the poor morale that is reported. There will be meetings with groups of employees on how to fix this and no one says a word that isn’t what mgmt wants to hear! I think this is because anyone speaking out about ways to solve the morale problems is identified as someone who is unhappy – and I have been told by mgmt that it is quicker and easier to cut out the infection that heal it. Nice eh? I don't know how to be this two-faced and retain any self-respect. It's become a job-requirement. Especially now that they've hired Ayn Rands ghost as the global hr person. Can anyone give me suggestions on how to keep my cool, not challenge these liars, and keep my mouth shut? My self-respect is plummeting, and I’m starting to drops little poison bombs whenever I can – for example a client asking why the company keeps losing people “well I spoke to Bob just a few days ago and I know he is very excited about being fairly compensated at his new job” – I know this hurts me in the long run, but I’m just busting with venom.

I bet your management is under the gun to do these lunch and learns and surveys, but has no intention of actually following up and implementing changes. They may have no idea how. They may not be empowered by their bosses. Or it just may not suit their goals. It is quicker and easier to pin it on the “troublemakers” and scare everyone else into submission. The reality is that a company exists to make money, not to please its employees or be fair. To some extent you ARE being paid to support company propaganda. But you don’t have to believe in it. No one expects you to. It’s all just a little corporate game people play. As far as keeping the mouth shut goes… that’s a tough one. I’m still struggling with that one! I’ve lost my cool many times, ranted, challenged my idiot boss in front of his team, and none of it made any difference. He still trots over to my desk to gossip about the rest of the team, though we’re completely on the outs. A number of us are overworked to the point where it could be defined as work place abuse, while the rest do almost nothing. It took me forever to realize this setup is intentional and nothing will ever change it. I bought a book the other week on reading people. It’s called I Know What You’re Thinking. I keep it on my desk at work now. I recommend a sense of humor, and not taking things too seriously and making sure your health always comes first. My colleague’s husband explained it this way when we complained about our idiot boss: He had the right to be an idiot as much as we had a right not to be, and the sooner we realized that the easier our lives would be. |

To bring up the subject in teh next "why is morale so low- meeting" tell tehm you often overhear co-workes who;d you'd rahter not mention their names, that htey feel alientated by all teh manipulation in teh office" maybe once you raise your hand and says something, others in teh room will find the courage to speak up themselves.
Good luck! |

I must work for the same company!! Unfortunatly it seems that the "corporate mindset" is the same all over. Get rid of people who rock their little boats and spout meaningless "buzz" words to get new people to work for them. Our propaganda goes like this "XXXXX Company is the employer of choice in XXXXXX by providing team building and postitive rewards to empower our associates". Wish I could be more helpful but we are in the same boat and honey, I'm sinking too! :( |
