I have a boss that was acquired by another agency that does not pay as well as mine. The boss knows what I make and has made remarks about how I make more than him. Since I was moved under him he has been treating me with interesting tactics. For example, he got angry at a meeting because a group of us were discussing how everyone’s' name should be included on a project. He said to the group that it was ridicules we were discussing this and if it would make me happy they should remove his name and put in mine. That never happened and I was removed from the project. The other thing that happens was he asked for a suggestion on how to move files from one server to another. He yelled at me for making what he felt was a stupid idea to use FTP to move the files from one server to another. Another time he yelled at me for not leaving him a voice mail and in fact I had but he felled to check his voice mail. In my review he rushed me to sign it and would not allow me to read over it. I found out he had added in the review that I could not handle stress. I have never received a copy. I have worked many hours late and on weekends to keep a computer system up and running during the day for the public to use. When I told him this he said that he did not ask me to do this. The latest thing has been he wishes to see me in person. I had a bad feeling about this so I inquired as to why it must be in person. His reply was he needed to better communicate with me. Based on the history on his tactics I decided to ask his boss into the meeting. When he gave me a time and date to meet with my boss I told him I would like a confirmation from his boss that he would be there. He reply was that I had to be in this meeting and it was not a request. I am concerned that since I have a position that pays more than him, he will run me out of my position to take it over himself.

That is quite a story. It sounds like your boss has a lot of resentment for you. The pay thing is always a stickler with anyone and the fact that he is your boss really ticks him off. This also makes him feel inadequate since we measure a good part of ourselves on pay scales. What I don’t get is why your company did not take in account for that. I mean lets face it; you do not put higher paid employees under a lower paid boss. Well they did anyway and now your boss’s sense of security is too fragile to deal with it. Now he is nervous and is trying to find ways to discredit you. It is office politics and right now you do not get along with your boss and it looks as if he does not care and is setting you up for something. Just remember even if you are in the right, your boss feels that he is in the right also. No one gets up in the morning and says that they are a jerk. (Even if they are) It is just that you guys don’t get along and the pay could have set it off, or maybe your very assertive and he sees you as a problem he must move out of his way to get were he wants to go. Who knows, but the important thing that you must get in touch with is your own feelings about the job. Step outside of yourself and look at the situation and decide if it is worth fighting for. Do not look at it as wrong or right, because it becomes a fight about winning and not about what you want. I have been there and I know it is not fun, but hold your chin up and you will get through this. I noticed in your writing that you are very perceptive; trust those perceptions and it will prepare you. |

He is required to give you a copy of your review. That is fact. As to not letting you read the review, does he go over it with you verbally? If he does not go over it with you , you "nicely tell him you want to read it first, then sign. If he goes over it verbally with you, then just sign. THE BOSS is always right , just say OK at the meetings, never disagree and do onto say anything else unles he requires a response. Bosses yell. Just do your job. IF you happen to be an IT person, ther are other jobs out there in that, even though the economy is bad. Maybe start sending out resumes. BOSS is insecure - (for sure the pay thing gets to him) and that makes him a bully boss. Keep your cool at all times and do your job so he cannot get you on that. Good luck. |

unlucky7, there is no law that states that employers must give performance reviews, let alone give their employees copies of said reviews. And that's a fact. |
