    Inappropriate interview question

I had an interview the other day, and the first question was "Tell me about yourself. Do you have a family?" I politely answered, " If you don't mind I would rather discuss my experience and qualifications for the job" Are people really this ignorant? Is this some sort of a test? If you rudely refuse to answer, you're not getting the job. If you answer an inappropriate question, they might think you are a total pushover and not hire you. Or does he just have no respect for boundareies? I am not sure if I want to work for this company now, I am a very private person.

Reply: I am not sure if you are male or female, but usually the question is asked to females to gauge other responsibilities in their lifes. Of course it is discriminatory and instead of answering these types of questions, I would ask questions in return- can you tell me how a family or kids would impact this position? Whatever inappropriate is asked, you can ask back with "what impact would this have on the position?"

Reply: Hi, thanks for the advice, I am female, I have had other interviewers ask me" Are you planning on having a career?" I answer that I plan to have a career no matter what happens in my personal life.Do you have any other suggestions?
