    Manager with a personal dislike

For the past year, I have been working at a small retail company. About five months ago, one of my co-workers got promoted to the position of manager. Since taking over the position of manager, she has become a complete nightmare..

I never percieved a problem with my relationship with her, but was appalled by her lack of professionalism, when on one particular night shift, she threw a huge temper tantrum at me, accused me of talking about me behind her back (which I did not do in the first place- I avoid work place gossip like the plague) and doing this all in front of customers.

She has never made a comment about my work and is really surprised when I do everything she asks me to do. For the most part, I feel as if I am walking on egg-shells when I'm working with her and its causing me to feel nervous. For example, the other day I asked her what she'd been up to on the weekend and she replied back rudely; "nothing that would interest you."

I have tried various approaches to dealing with her, such as being extra-friendly to her and of course doing everything she asks.I have also just sometimes gone to work and have ignored her ( as she does with me)and then she wonders why no one is talking to her.

HOw do you deal with someone like that?? I have seriously considered quitting, but I do like the work and get along great with my other co-workers. I also get along very well with the owners of the business (they are lovely people).

If anyone could provide any advice it would be really appreciated, as I dread going to work and am stressing out like crazy.

Reply: I would not quit the job because of her. I am in a similar situation as you my boss treats me "funny" because she is jealous of the fact everyone gets along with me, especially her boss, and she is very much disliked by all, very incompetent, etc. and her personality leaves much to be desired. we have a new co-worker who also notices how my boss treats me and she thinks this woman is jealous of me also. I just learned to ignore alot of her childish behavior and simply do my job and do it well, I continue to be the person i am and will not let her take my joy and hapiness. I use it as a learning experience it teaches me how to be more tolerant, patient and understanding of others while at the same time I am working and not letting someone else dictate my future. Remember she is probably miserable not you so don't let her take you joy or your job.
