Three Tips for Coping With a Nightmare Boss

Consider the boss who gave an employee a written reprimand for "leaving work without permission" -- after she passed out in the bathroom and was whisked by ambulance to a nearby hospital."

The boss certainly has no emotional intelligence leadership skills. This boss is only out for results and will treat people like figures. Sometimes too, when bosses back-stab to get their present position, they only care about the over all boss. This individual must be a mean fellow.

I didn't get written up for leaving work, I was sent home 2wice this week because the first day I was singled out to go home because it was a slow day. Then the second day, the shift runner tells me if I say I can't perform a certain task he will send me home. So I tell him, "Hey you don't scare me". Then he sends me home, tells the general manager that I was swearing (which I was not) then also making up stories about how I don't work when I'm there..which is untrue. The only reason I said i couldn't do that certain task was because the machine wasn't working properly. He is so mean and now I'm fired. What is wrong with this picture?

My boss has no knowledge, little experience and absolutely no social, managerial skills. She does however, make tea for one of the partners - this seems to be the key to success. Perhaps we should all slack off and make mistakes at work - AS LONG AS THE TEA IS GOOD.......

I have a boss who does not respect confidentiality. He has repeated conversations on one occasion that I found out about and just recently sent a private email between he and I to a client in which the client was named in a way that was less than favorable (but factual)... how do I handle this... I have already spoken to him about this...

My boss is a continuous stream of negative comments about everyone in our organization. The one thing I can be certain of is that this is not restricted to others; I am sure I am an object of her verbal onslaught, as well. I'm not sure which is worse - the continual non-stop chatter or the subject of that chatter. I honestly do not understand how this woman secured or keeps her position.

I have a supervisor that is a 'Lime Light Lover'. Always needs to be in the spotlight. The problem is when she does not fully understand something, it becomes the fault of someone else. Constantly looking for some way to point a finger of blame. Most often, resorting to the "It's your responsobility" statement when something isn't done according to her rules. Favorite buzz term: 'Knowledege transfer'. Favorite thing to do: Nasty gram e-mails cc'd to her boss.

My supervisor is a religeous fanatic that tries to force the people under her to join her church or else you're treated like dirt. Much of her time is doing assignments for church while at her company assigned project, leaving frequently to attend to church members and then getting angry at company personnel for her failures in a harsh way. Her church members at our place of work band together to apply peer pressure to anyone that works for her that does not join her church or doesn't see things her way. Odd but maybe this is one for the books.

My manager is something else, according to him his position was not given to him, company have no choice but give it to him because he is that good. Since he was transfered to our store which is I see as a training ground for loosers like him, we were doing good then. Now, we are loosing tremendous amount of sales and loosing good quality workers because majority of us hates "The Manager". I know for sure that he will be gone in a matter of time to go to one of our stores and terrorized it's employees. I hope that the company realized what's the real deal with him because it is becoming a company's lost as the days go by.MLA

My boss is unprofessional, disrespectful, disorganized. He uses profanity in our team meetings towards me or whenever he feels the need. He is very racist and it makes me feel uncomfortable. He doesn’t pay us on time. In addition, he gets short with us when he is doing payroll. He is cheap, complains about money all the time, and how expensive it is to run his company. We are not allowed to turn on the AC without his approval. Once we get his approve we CAN NOT let the temperature under 78 degrees. You can never please him. His company has a high turnover because they can not deal with his personality. He told us that we needed to know everything even though he doesn’t provide us with any training. He said that he pays us to know everything. Our job description changes every week.

I work with the same boss as the person that just posted the comment above mine. I have to agree with everything she mention. In addition to her comment, I would also like to add that he expects everyone working for him to be perfect but he makes mistakes left and right. He also tries to blame us for his wrong doings. We told him that we are only human and we will make mistakes and he said that it is unacceptable. When I first started working here, I attended a weekly meeting. There was a Hispanic man sitting next to me. Apprently, he made a minor mistake on a proposal. My boss' comment was this to him, " You are lucky that you are working here with me because you can be a gardener." I was so shock by his comment. All is all, he is set in his ways and will never change.

Why cant bosses be held responsible for there verbal attacks. The verbal harrassment the verbal assults, and why cant there be LAWS to be PASSED for the way that workers are being treated??? Why cant there be LAWSUITS???

I just recently got a new boss and I can't stand him. He is sexist, and bullies people all of the time. He swears in meetings and acts very unprofessional. He is only out for the company and how to bring in more patients, not for the employees. He tells me I'm emotional, and I could "use a drink"

My boss is very intelligent and experienced, but can turn on you in a heart beat. She demands that all supervisors keep her informed, no suprises but will get us in a meeting in front of the ceo and way-lay us with any thing she wants. God help you if you complain. Please pray for me and every one that works for her.

I have a boss who "came into her own" late in life. She has no people/social skills in the workplace unless she is dealing with an entity that can make her look good. In the IT world, if you are not technical, you are a necessary evil. She keeps information to herself which inhibits you from doing your job. She says if she has to tell you everything, then you are not helping her and she might as well do it herself. So, we pass like ships in the night and all communication is done via email. Unfortunately, she is a very cold, unempathetic woman who would never see herself as that if she were told. So, it's one day at a time. I will never disrespect her as I don't want to risk losing my job.

    User: anonymous

My boss made comments to me such as; "I thought for your age you would know better" , "I can't believe you ask questions that make no sense." She rolls her eyes and gyrates her body, and sighs all the time to express her frustration with anything you do. She gives me a written warning when over hearing me tell a friend on the phone that I wanted to quit because her comments are abusive. She often assesses me based on assumptions rather than familiarizing herself with what I do or do not know. She locked me out of the database we use to request days off and then lies about it. She is always lying about what she said or meant to say. She exhibits many characteristics of a psychopath. She will lie to your face even when you know the truth. Anyone who works under her, hates her but corporate leadership seems to love deceptive and manipulative people like her.

I haven't even made it a month, and my boss literally screamed at me because I stood up for myself. She expects me to do my job, without much, if any, information. Today she told me I was crazy, and adolescent. I could have even taken all of that, but the scream put me over the edge...and I'm not the first assistant. I hope I find another job at this place, because I really like the people...but at what price? My Pride? My Emotions? My SOUL?!?!?!?

my supervisor is a female who made some advances on me in the past & i fell for that. Her plan was to keep me as her sex slave(she is married & her husband is sick). When I told her I was getting married, she wasn't very happy about it. Now she turned to a child, really, not talking to me(&the; staff noticed this, giving me her back when i go to her with a question about work, socializing with this female workerwith whom i have a good working relationship(she posted a policy a year ago stating that socializing at work is not permitted outside break time),she wears too much make-up,which she applies every hour. I guess she is trying to make me jealous. She criticizes my work all the time(in the past I was the best employee in her eyes),she doesn't communicate with me & she is trying to make my life hell. But one thing i am sure about: I am not leaving this place because of her. Either we get fired together or I am staying put 7 she has to deal with it. I have documented everything that happened between us( I even have her on tape recorder, sort of prepared myself for something like this) & if the company knows this we are both gone. I tried to reason with her for our benefit but she is very stubborn. I know she feels hurt & I know she wants to keep her job also. I guess it'll be sometime before she comes back to her senses.

My boss has bipolar disorder. His private life permeates the office. He lashes out at others for things that are his fault. He insults us and tells us we are stupid. He tries to hug us all the time too and that makes me uncomfortable. He expects us to know everything but will not explain anything to us. Always, we are waiting for the next tantrum. He lies and manipulates. He tells so many lies he cannot even keep track of them.

Well, my boss has his mother working in our department, Queen Bee and I am his assistant. Per policy, family can't work in same department but the administrator allowed it because "I" would be her supervisor. Well, she is part time and literally comes in whenever she feels like it, missing on average 5-6 days a month. But I never know when she is coming in. Company policy states the all call-ins are to be reported directly to your immediate supervisor. Hmmmmm. Also, she basically runs the place and he usually allows it. Since he took this position, she somehow has ended up running the department. If she likes someone, your'e "in", and if not, watch out. Whatever she says goes.

I have a new boss who is making it very clear that he wants me out. I have been in upper level management at the same large corporation for several years. I have a good reputation and many accomplishments and successes to back it up. I had reported directly to an executive a couple levels up from my position and we had a good relationship. He was promoted up another level brought in someone to fill his old job, making him my direct boss. There are numerous things he has done that indicate he doesn't want me. He has never spoken to me about my background or approach to managing the group, but has gone directly to my managers for these same type of discussions. He does not have a civil conversation with me and when it comes to reviewing work items, he snaps at me and it always ends up that we call in my managers for the discussions. He has gone directly to other groups in the organization that I normally deal with to make decisions. He has refused to let me participate in other corporate wide efforts that I have been asked to participate in. He has called me a liar and berates most things I do. Some days he can be less abusive and I start to think it will work out, but then he goes back to the same abuse. It is starting to make me doubt my abilities and causing emotional turmoil. I have heard that he had a reputation as a back-stabber and will do anything to promote himself, and made enemies in his previous unit of the corporation. I only need to work for about another 4 years so I would rather keep my current position instead of looking elsewhere, but the situation is unbearable and either I have to go or he does.

I served under many leaders in the Navy for close to ten years, and one of the most important things I've realized is that we are all human. I had a Master Chief (highest enlisted rank)who scared the crap out of everyone...even most of the officers in our department! He smiled once and I swear that his face cracked and a tooth fell out of his mouth! Too often...these leaders that we fear or despise the most were the same kids that were bullied themselves. Esteem issues, Generational curses, boiling chemicals in the brain!!! What ever you decide to call it...Take some time to self reflect, rather than self pity or blame. The best thing I ever did for myself was take some time off to discover new ways to contribute more meaningfully with my skills and talents. That Master Chief was only a man, I chose God and self reflection to rise above the occassion! Stop focusing on his or her faults and stop seeking revenge!! Continue researching and learning from the experiences of others. Trust me, it's time well spent!

My newboss is just mean and manipulative. He is like a copperhead snake. As soon as the old boss left the new one turned ugly. Our business did not meet the goals for over a whole month mostly due to his frantic chasing after a part time girl. I finally realized it was him putting this young girl up to being very ugly to me, attempting to steal money and make it look as if it was me, calling him repeatedly on his cell just to report a bunch of lies. This new bhoss basically did nothing for awhol six weeks except act a total fool. Even the other co-workers noticed but they were truly afraid to say anything. Now since the girl is gone for goodhe is paying more attention to his job. our business is actually beginning to thrive again as it did when the previous manager ran it' except the new manager is pulling it under with his ugly remarks and liesand creating an work culture rank with gossip and undercurrents. It is not always a veryfriendly environment to work in. Only now he pays attention only to the brown noser. That is only a small part of what he has tried to do. I am constantly maligned behind my back and ridiculed by this monster. I miss the old boss. I am keeping track of everything that occurs in case of having to fight back, Think this dude has a hatred of single moms and any female over the age of 22.And he only likes people who suck up and brown nose.I hope something just out of nowhere makes him eat payback and then some.

My boss work schedule is not only talk about her family 24/7 to the staff in the department, but anyone who steps in the office - can get off the phone talking non-business related conversations that you cannot avoid to overheard - Oh god, she must stay at home....she loves being a housewife!!!! It's amazing how she manipulates her superiors and belittle anyone below her - She is the supervisor but have no leadership skills at all....she is a crisis supervisor, not one that accepts new idea or implements procedures that works for the company....she contradicts her instructions all the time, and then blame you for things she asked you to do....She's always busy arranging her kids life - and of course, she has her favorites - which maintain her informed of the smallest things that happen in that department....I wish she could only come and get her cheque and forget about us...things works a lot better when she's absent.. She talks bad about the company where she's been for over 18 years....does companies deserve to loose good employees over a desperate housewife with no aspirations?????

Its incredible to find that i am not alone. I work in a trade that demands skill and training. I was made an apprentice to my boss but to date have only been shown 10% of what my job entails. I have worked there two years and when i ask for help in doing a job i recieve nothing but derogative comments. My boss would much rather spend his day on his laptop talking to friends and visiting ebay than do any form of work. And having to deal with customers, carry out my job and fetch things for him he wonders why i get so far behind. Its terrible that someone can be so lazy and use his position as an excuse to nothing. I would love to leave and would feel no sadness if i was laid off or sacked. My boss is nasty, two faced, lazy, untrustworthy, maniupulative, and worse of all does nothing to promote the business he owns.

I have two bosses. One in his mid 50's the other in his early 30's. The two have different management styles and tell my group to do different tasks. I got yelled at today because I was following one's orders and was told by the other not to do that. He also told me to say something to one of my clients last week. When I did today, he pushed his chair back, crossed his arms and pursed his lips and yelled "I would never tell you to say that. Get your information right before you come in my office. You dissapoint me that you haven't learned by now." I only said the exact words he wanted me to say because I even wrote them down word for word when he originally told me to say it and I was reading off of my paper. Then he always apologizes five minutes after the fact. He swears alot and uses bully tactics to scare people. This really ruins your day and your self-esteem.

My boss is a control freak and extremely condescending. Will explain something and then say it's not what she said. So, I write it all down. Even when shown later that it's what she said, she will deny it. She doesn't fully read emails, then blames me when she gets it wrong. Even if I read it back to her, she still doesn't get that she is the one in the wrong. What a piece of work!

Wow! I think half the people who have posted here have my boss! And yet, this is her only at her worst, she's really pretty nice most of the time, a little different, a little strange sometimes, but a charmer. Then you never know when she will attack, and I really don't think she sees it as attacks, though that's the way it comes across. We've gone through a lot of turnover, and everyone knows why, and things change a little at times, get better for a while, but then again, they never really change. I always feel sorry for the new people, dread the time when she will turn on them. I've outlasted so many I'm wondering if part of the problem is me. One thing about it, I used to be very sensitive, thin skinned, but I'm tough now, don't let her bother me, well, much anyway.

Pretty sure my boss has a personality dissorder. She didn't give me a written reprimand for not being at work but she lied about my work hours which had in fact been allocated by one of her own superiors. She is clearly the sort of person who is always itching for a fight because i'd only just walked in the door when she starts at me (i wasn't even doen the corridore yet!). Her superior had told me to start at her office at 2pm so i show up at 2pm and she asked where i had been because i was supposed to start at 9am. As it transpired I was meant to start at 2pm and she knew it. She's been on my back daily ever since and I've heard alonog the grape vine that before she became manager of that office and was just a regular staff member, so many customers comoplained about her attitude that they wouldn't go to the office she worked at to conduct their business and that they'd rather have gone to another office. A colleague went off on stress leave and is on a "back to work plan' at another office...good luck to her.

I just Started working for a small clothing store, part time. My Boss who hired me and another girl turned on us the second week we were there. First off their register training was like 10 minutes which in my past experience with retail training was like for 1 week. The first day was not so bad for us until the managers would yell at all of us for not selling enough clothing and then they would just give us dirty, disaproving looks!!! Finaly I over heard one of the mangers talking to a ex employee about not wanted to hire any more people of a certain Race. I was so floored!!! I would have keeped my mouth shut but then this manager left me alone doing 10 returns which by the way they never taught us to do. I had had it I went to the store manager and told him I would not be coming back because of everything I mentioned above. He begged me not to leave, I still left!!!! This store is a very popular store by the way but i would never shop there again!!!

my boss has limited personality skills, and therefore has the tendency to get on the wrong side of peoples emotions. This person has been confronted about their inability to be a strong leadership type, but they refuse to listen to the complaints of the employers. Management are also aware, but their hands are tied unless we put into place a formal grievance procedure detailing our grievances. But youd think after numerous verbal attempts at addressing the issue directly with this boss they would think of moving on? To add to this complication, this person is in a personal relationship with the boss above them. So much for a non biased representative! Apparently the law states that unless one can prove that this affects their performance theres nothing you can do.So until I catch them being inappropriate at work Im stuck with a boss who is rather useless with understanding what good people management skills look like. One is left asking, how did they actually get the job role? What criteria does management use to find such clowns?

My co-worker/ex-boss is physchotic. She whines and cries until she gets her way and treats everyone like crap. Management knows and will actually tell people that have run-ins with her that she has no people skills but if good at her job. She is a control freak extreme and everyone is subject to her tempers and whims. I have had to get counciling due to her constant harassment. I just read information on a book about mobbing in the workplace. She does this also gets people to be on her side so she won't do/say things to or about them.

My new BEASTLY boss lacks knowledge, people skills, ability to lead, tact, discretion...you name it. She feels the need to micro-manage with stupid forms she creates for us to fill out. But the best one had to come when she said, "There's been too much white privilege around here, and it's time for me to step up and advocate for the African-American employees!" When I told her I was offended by her comment, she pointed to her "Diversity Award" on her shelf and said it was impossible for her to be racist because she was black! She has also been known to say that she has to "keep the crackers around here happy"... She's horrible, horrible, horrible! (Oh, I should mention that she steals from the budget--her son now has a new i-pod that she expensed...) I love my job--been there 15 years--but hate the work environment.

My bosses are married. One gets mad at me for one thing and i get to hear it twice. I'm new and their way of training is to give me the work and see if i can do it , then yell at me when I make errors. Sometimes they dont even let me correct the errors. How the heck am I supposed to learn anything that way? Anyway, I'm on my way out.

I work for a horrible woman who has gotten rid of the past 6 people that have worked for her because of how mean she treats everyone else. 15 minutes before closing time for the holidays, her christmas gift was to come in the room screaming about some totally made up thing. can anything be done about people are that are just insane?

Sheila says, Any thoughts out there on this scenario where an owner of commercial property, while within legal rights to have security cameras installed, had done thusly without informing a particular worker - at least not until a month later, and only by word of another (employee) from the "inner circle". Would you feel violated?

I worked for a horribly mean woman for six months. She was horrible. I am 58 and I have worked for 36 years. I got a promotion feeling like I was out of the woods. Lo and behold, my 2nd best is a horrible woman. I have had two mean horrible women bosses in a sector of the 'Services'. This is a first time for me to go through so much bad karma. Is it that I am an Admin Asst - does that line me up for being a target? I worked for another 'Service' for six years and never went through anything like I have gone through with this 'service'. Horrible.

I am a member of a team which is handled by a headstrong team leader. she happens to would be of our systems administrator. She is a genuine sadistic lady who went through a miserabel childhood which propebly made her arrogant n merceless. Recently she made me a scape goat for mistake i never commited. Our sys adminitrator scolded me with out going into details merely on her word. Our staff at office praying god daily to bring up a change in her attitude.

I have a boss that likes to get nasty when you ask questions. I was given a task to complete, which I had only done once before. Instead of making a mistake through lack of knowledge, I decided to verify the correct process with her first. Big Mistake. She proceeded to yell at me saying that I should have taken a risk instead of bothering her, told me that whilst questions are important I should "just know" what to do. Its kind of hard when they don't TRAIN YOU! You just Can't win! :(

Ugh! my boss is NEVER at work - he's always off sick, or on leave. On the rare occasions he is in the office, he's too busy or forgets to turn up to meetings! He never tells us what is going on, never keeps his promises, constantly makes excuses and despite the fact he's actually a nice guy, I'm fricking sick of not having a manager to support me or do what he says he will do, when he says he will do it!!!!

My boss is the passive-aggressive Queen. She mumbles stuff about me under her breathe all day long. She makes snide remarks about my handwriting. Is rude to me and the customers. The owner could careless I've been looking for another job for almost a year. I don't know how I am going to continue to deal with her.

My boss is a psycho. She steals from the company and the manager protects her! He loves her so much because she sucks up to him all the time. We are all trying to prove to him what a liar and a thief she is, but he just won't believe it. He thinks we are all just trying to cause trouble whenever we speak up about her. It's very frustrating!!

Gee, them are some problems! Luckily I started my own business and get to use my own creativity and come up with ideas and products that help and inspire others (I hope!). I do volunteer work on the side, too, so as to honestly help others. Its a nice balance so far. I had a good boss once (so called!)who did lots of extra activities too but it always reminded me of that fella in the Bible who prayed on a public street corner so that others would think he was a good-hearted dude when in fact he was not. Not vewy nice of him, wouldn't you agwee?

I work for a very cruel and old Dentist. I am new and undertaking a workplace training based position. However, from day one I have been expected to have all the knowlege of a qualified nurse and have not been provided training. The expectations are high, the conditions appauling, and his methods outdated. I am determined to stick it out to have the last laugh and use humour to overcome his hideous nature.... If anyone watches Jeff Dunham standup, look at the character Walter... that is my boss!

My ex manager, lead, and the HR worked in a team to drive all younger women out of the office. The manager a middle-aged Indian woman who is very jealousy-driven and corrupted. The lead is incompetence and lack of knowledge. The HR a dwarf who hates young women who wears perfume. The manager would ask me to do a task and submit it. After I've done it, the lead should come to my cube and shout at me saying that he knows the task better than I do. When I showed him the email the task was assigned to me by the manager. The manager would then tell me the lead is my mentor I shouldn't do anything without his permission or guidance. What a team work!

Another example. The manager would ask me to do something I have done before (like filling in a company specific form) without telling me how to do, and send to the HR. The HR would then send me and the manager an email saying that I did the whole thing wrong. The manager then tell me that I should fill in column A. So, I did and sent out again. The HR sent out another email to me and manager and said I did it wrong again. The manager then sent me and the HR an email saying that who told me to fill out column A, it should be column B, and asked me to be careful next time. The HR can tell me how to fill the form the very first time. Why is manager involved in company forms which is in charge by the HR? Is it a job function for these people that they spend all of their office hours sabotaging employees?
